Family members of Henrietta Lacks visited campus to discuss their famous relative and the best-selling book about her life. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks tells the story of a poor black tobacco farmer whose cancerous cells were taken without her knowledge in 1951. These cells would become one of the most important tools in medicine, helping in the development of the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization and more. Ms.

Carolyn McKearney was new to Bridgewater in the early 1980s as a student working with developmentally challenged children. One day, while in the pool with a young boy, she panicked when the boy had a seizure. But it was through the efforts of Dr. Joseph Huber – known to many, especially students and alumni as “Doc” – that she realized that she had the skills to help this child.

Twice-Told Tale

The remarkable tale of a best-selling book on the Alaska wilderness originally published to rave reviews in 1973 – and that was subsequently reissued in 1999 and won the National Book Award – was shared with an audience at BSU by Laurel Keith Lies, daughter of the book’s author, the late Sam Keith, G ’62.

Striking Gold

Volume 11 of the Bridge has been recognized with 11 Gold Circle awards from the Columbia Student Press Association. The staff of the student-run journal took home the first place award for overall design in the literary magazine category. It also earned the top award for cover design, which features an image by senior photography major Liz McDonough

World Affairs

Bill Clifford, president of the World Affairs Council, was the featured speaker at the first John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speakers Series event of the academic year. He spoke on American power and how recent developments in the Middle East are shifting the world order.

Mr. Clifford is a native of Bridgewater and the son of the late Dr. Guy Clifford, a longtime member of the political science department. His mother, Gale, attended the lecture. 

An 'immortal life'

Family members of Henrietta Lacks will appear at Bridgewater State University's Horace Mann Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. to discuss the book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot - the latest volume in the One Book One Community program. A book signing will follow the presentation. The event is free and open to the public. 'Amuse Bouche'

"Amuse Bouche: A Visual Narrative of Food" is on display in Bridgewater State University's Maxwell Library through Jan. 9. Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.; Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 12 noon to 11:45 p.m. The library is closed on holidays.

'Under Creation'

An installation of collaborative and solo works by Boston-based artists Kenji Nakyama and Dana Woulfe called "Under Creation" will be hosted by the Wallace L. Anderson Gallery at Bridgewater State University starting Monday, Oct. 6. A reception for the artists will be held Thursday, Oct. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibition runs through Thursday, Nov.6.

Scholars Welcomed

Members of the BSU community came together to welcome two of their newest colleagues at the first CARS New Faculty Research Forum of the year. Celebrating the institution’s liberal arts tradition, new faculty members from English and Physics presented their research, while established faculty members from the Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies and Elementary Education served as discussants and shared interdisciplinary perspectives on the research.
