Collin Estrada has fond memories of his time at Bridgewater State University. He uses the same word again and again to describe his memories about his time on campus.

“Let's put it like this: L-O-V-E. Love,” says Mr. Estrada, who referred to Dr. Lisa Battaglino, now dean of Education, as his “United States mother.”

A Little Bit Extra

When 8-year-old Maia moves around St. John’s Anglican Primary School in Belize City, there is not much space for her wheelchair. More often than not, because of the school’s poor flooring, stairways or other obstacles, it’s easier for her to get on her hands and knees and crawl. 

Maia has spina bifida, a debilitating spinal birth defect that prevents her from walking.

John MacLellan, ’88, traveled to Washington earlier this month where President Obama presented him and 24 of his fellow police officers the “Top Cop Award” for their bravery and dedication. He was also named an Officer of the Month by the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. The Watertown police sergeant was involved in the shootout with the alleged suspects three nights after the Boston Marathon bombing. 

Hard-Won Accolades

Thirteen Bridgewater State University students, members of what’s commonly referred to as the ICE Program, were congratulated by Gov. Deval Patrick and other officials at a Friday morning ceremony. The event marked the completion of the academic year by the program’s participants.

“We are proud to have them as part of our BSU community,” said Mary Price, director for university’s Center for Pre-K-12 Educational Outreach, in her opening remarks.

One Book One Community

Jennifer Pharr Davis, author of Becoming Odyssa, the One Book One  Community read for the spring in the Town of Bridgewater and on the campus of Bridgewater State University, will discuss her book on Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium on the university campus. An endurance athlete, speaker, author and owner of the Blue Ridge Hiking Co., she became the overall record holder on the Appalachian Trail by hiking its 2,181 miles in 46 days, traveling an average of 47 miles a day.

New Beginnings

The skies brightened just in time for Bridgewater State University to hold its first-ever split convocation ceremony.

More than 750 undergraduates from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences were honored during the morning ceremony; the afternoon added nearly 650 graduates from the Ricciardi College of Business, the College of Education and Allied Studies, and the Bartlett College of Science & Mathematics.

The Future Awaits

“Strange, it doesn’t feel real,” said Jenifer Polson of Avon, as she prepared to take part in BSU’s annual Graduate Commencement Convocation. “It feels like I should be registering for classes in the fall. It hasn’t set in yet.” 

The graduates, along with hundreds of family and friends, attended the ceremony, which was held in the Rondileau Campus Center auditorium.

Shinning Bright

Christine Michelson, ’13, has made her mark at BSU, and her accomplishments, along with those of more than two dozen of her peers, were honored at the statehouse.

Ms. Michelson was named as one of this year’s 29 Who Shine at a ceremony held in front of the grand staircase of the Massachusetts State House.
