AFFIRMATIVE ACTION UNDER FIRE
When Is It Reverse Discrimination?
In 1989, a New Jersey high school faced a painful decision: one of two
teachers with equal tenure and equivalent credentials-one African-Americans, the
other Caucasian had to be laid off. By 1995, the reverse discrimination
complaint lodged by Caucasian teacher Sharon Taxman had become a national issue
of great political and legal significance, leading to a surprising out-of-court
settlement funded by civil rights groups. In this program, ABC News
correspondent Nina Totenberg reports on that remark-able case, while anchor
Cokie Roberts moderates a spirited debate between the President of the NAACP and
the Director of Litigation from the Institute for Justice. (22 Minutes)
THE CONSTITUTION: THAT DELICATE BALANCE
Constitutional issues come to life in this Emmy Award winning series created
by veteran journalist Fred Friendly. In Congress Hall in Philadelphia, key
decision-makers discuss urgent public issues of the day using the Constitution
as their guide. Praised by The New York Times as "first rate," the series
gives viewers an unforgettably vivid experience of the life and power of this
enduring document. Among those engaging in spontaneous and often heated debate
are former CIA Director James Schlesinger, former President Gerald Ford,
Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox, and journalists Gloria Steinem and Bill
Moyers. Former U.S. Supreme Court Judge Potter Stewart provides legal
background.

DIFFERENT LIKE YOU (w/two booklets) Appreciating Diversity in the 21st
Century
Not too many years ago, conformity was the workplace standard. Assimilation to
the prevailing corporate culture was the norm. Employees learned to fit in, to
dress according to company policy, to think only so much as was required to obey
the chain of command, and, above all, to not rock the boat. These days, however,
we know that the workforce is becoming a diverse, multi-cultural, ever-changing
mosaic of individuals. This video is engaging, thought-provoking, challenging,
and cutting edge.

SHATTERING THE SILENCES: THE CASE FOR MINORITY FACULTY
This video offers everyone in higher education an unprecedented opportunity
to see American campuses through the eyes of minority faculty. Shattering the
Silences cuts through the rhetoric of the current Culture Wars by telling the
stories of eight pioneering scholars - African American, Latino, Native American
and Asian American. As we watch them teach, mentor and conduct research, we
realize in concrete terms how a diverse faculty enriches and expands traditional
disciplines and contributes to a more inclusive campus environment.
These eight professors also discuss the excessive workload and special pressures minority faculty face everyday in majority white institutions. For example, minority teachers are disproportionately tapped to provide diversity on faculty committees and in scholarly organizations. They often find themselves de facto advisors for all the students of their ethnicity on campus. Their research and teaching is held to different standards from that of their white colleagues.
Shattering the Silences has been designed to help universities and Universitys remedy many of the recruiting and retention problems the video reveals. 85 minutes

MAKING DIVERSITY WORK
Today's workforce is one of many different identity groups, based on age,
gender, culture, education, lifestyles, and physical abilities. Thus, being
different and making a difference are both very important to today's worker.
Managing employees so that their uniqueness is valued is called "managing
diversity". It goes beyond co-existence, tolerance, or compromise. Managing
diversity requires a manager who can create a group of empowered employees who
can celebrate each other's differences and also serve the vision, mission, and
goals of the organization
How to manage diversity? This video offers practical tools to help managers
develop the awareness and skills necessary to unite different employees and help
them form productive work groups.

On the night of the Oscars telecast, the town's-and the world's-center of
attention is Greenleaf teacher Howard Brackett. A former student who's now a
superstar actor tells an audience of millions that Howard is gay. Poor Howard.
He's outted when he didn't know he was in! Kevin Kline plays stunned Howard,
scrambling to go forth with his wedding to devoted Emily (Joan Cusack) and doing
his frantic best to assert manliness. With clever dialogue, antic situations and
a stellar cast that includes Matt Dillon, Tom Selleck, Debbie Reynolds and Bob
Newhart, In & Out-and-out fun!
OUT OF THE PAST: Episode 101
This film makes the connection between the past and the present of the gay
and lesbian history in America as it follows a young woman's struggle to start a
gay-straight alliance in her public high school in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Interwoven through her story are the concise biographies of five men and women
who shaped the gay liberation movement. A valuable resource for teachers and
educators, the film is comprised of distinct "acts" and can be divided up into
20-minute segments for classroom use.

CHANGING THE RULES
The different styles of play learned in childhood carry-over into adult
lives, and are played out every day in the workplace. The hierarchical
culture of mean and the power dead-even culture of women
are often at odds with each other, resulting in communication problems between
genders. While neither culture is "right" or "wrong", the differences are real
and can impede successful working relationships.
The purpose of this video workshop is to help viewers solve gender-related
communication problems by identifying the "invisible rules" men and women play
by, and, providing effective strategies for more successful communication
between genders in the workplace.

GENDER EQUITY FOR FACULTY MEMBERS
Gender inequity exists throughout the educational system in differentiated
treatment and the use of gender-based language and examples. This video presents
three scenes of student experiences with gender inequity. The first depicts a
humorous, obvious acceptance of gender-based assumptions; the second explores
subtler problems that arise in a classroom; and the third shows some minor
adjustments that can create a more equitable classroom. Video Facilitation

INVISIBLE RULES: MEN, WOMEN AND TEAMS
Men and women grow up in different cultures, learning different lessons
about what it means to be a leader and what it means to be a team player. In her
thoughtful and lively presentation, Dr. Heim sorts out some of these
INVISIBLE RULES. These differences are not right or wrong but they can
result in confusion and conflict. By making these INVISIBLE RULES
visible, Dr. Heim provides the basis for better understanding, communication and
teamwork.
THE FAIRER SEX
ABC News Prime Time Live set out to discover whether there are daily
differences in being a male versus a female in today's American society,
particularly in the workplace. The result of Prime Time Live's investigation
will either frustrate and anger you or not disturb you much at all. Chances are,
responses will be divided according to gender. We live in a society in which
gender stereotypes have been taken for granted. Yet more than half of the
population faces discrimination on a daily basis. The challenge in the workplace
is to eliminate discriminatory decisions and unwritten rules based on gender.
Only then can men and women translate fairness into solid teamwork.

In 1988 in Jasper, Texas James Byrd Jr., a black man, was chained to a

altered, and the nation woke up to the horror of a modern day lynching. In
The Two Towns of Jasper, two film crews, one black and one white, set out to

charged with the crime. The result is an explicit and troubling portrait of race
in America, one that also asks how and why a crime like this could have

multitude of perspective.
AMERICAN APARTHEID
This program examines African-American equality in today's society, and
questions whether past racial gains are slowly being eroded, and whether a new
wave of racial disharmony is gathering force. Issues discussed include the
continuing segregation of American communities, violence in black communities,
and substandard minority housing. The Reverend Louis Farrakhan's Million Man
March on Washington, and the differing reactions among blacks and whites to the
O.J. Simpson verdict, are cited as indicators of growing divisions between the
races. (37 Minutes)
DARK PASSAGES
Shot on location in West Africa and in Virginia, Dark Passages tells the
story of impact of the Atlantic slave trade. Using a mixture of interviews,
slave narratives, and dramatization, this program takes the viewer from the
"Door of No Return" in the House of Slaves on Goree Island off the coast of
Dakar, Senegal, to the village of Juffere on the Gambia River.
EYES ON THE PRIZE America's Civil Rights Years 1954-1965 Volumes 1-6
Volume 1- Awakenings (1954-1956)
Emmett Till...Rosa Park...Marin Luther King, ...these are names that
awakened America to the injustice of racial discrimination. "Awakenings" tells
the stories that launched the modern movement for civil rights. From grass-roots
protests to Supreme Court victories "Awakenings" captures the courage of Black
Americans as they stride toward freedom.
Volume 2- Fighting Back (1957-1962)
Little Rock...James Meredith..."Ole Miss"...these names stood out in the
years that followed the first victories of the civil rights movement. "Fighting
Back" takes us to the schools of the South, where the battle lines were first
drawn.
Volume 3- Ain't Scared of Your Jails (1960-1961)
Sit-Ins...SNCC...Freedom Riders...these were the symbols of a collective
fight for civil rights. The front lines moved from the courts and school
corridors to confrontations in daily life, and University students led the way.
While their protests often met with arrest and imprisonment, their response was
clear: "Ain't Scared of your Jails."
Volume 4- No Easy Walk (1961-1963)
Albany...Birmingham...Washington, D.C....these are landmarks along the
journey to equal justice. In "No Easy Walk" we visit the cities where the
tactics of nonviolent protest met both success and failure. Why had nonviolence
worked in some places and not others?
Volume 5- Mississippi: Is This America? (1962-1964)
Medgar Evers...Freedom Summer...MFDP...these are names linked forever with
the most precious civil right of any democracy-the right to vote. "Mississippi:
Is This America?" traces the fight for that right-long denied to many by law,
custom, intimidation, and violence.
Volume 6- Bridge to Freedom (1965)
Selma...Montgomery..."We Shall Overcome"...These were the signposts near the
end of a decade-long struggle for civil rights. After ten years of effort, the
right of African-Americans to vote was still denied. President Johnson presented
to Congress the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
EYES ON THE PRIZE America at the Racial Crossroads 1965-1985 Volumes 7-14
Volume 7- The Time Has Come (1964-1966)
Malcolm X...Black Panthers...Stokely Carmichael...In the South and in the
urban North, leaders emerged who articulated the black communities' sense of
urgency and anger. These were voices who helped transform the civil rights
movement into a broader struggle for human rights-and for true equality and
economic justice. These leaders called for different tactics, and their message
was direct: "The Time Has Come."
Volume 8- Two Societies (1965-1968)
Watts...Chicago...Detroit...These were the new battle lines during the
turbulent late '60s. "Two Societies" reveals the divisions that existed between
blacks and whites in America's big cities, where African-Americans had gained
little from the freedom movement in the South. A presidential commission warned
that America had become two societies, separate and unequal. The war on poverty
and racism had been eclipsed by the war in Vietnam.
Volume 9- Power! (1966-1968)
Carl Stokes...Bobby Seale and Huey Newton...Ocean Hill
Brownsville...Solutions to the problems of inequality were as diverse as America
itself. Black leaders emerged with different political agendas and communities
mobilized for change in strikingly different ways. But their ultimate goal was
the same: "Power!"
Volume 10- The Promised Land (1967-1968)
Vietnam...The Poor People's Campaign...Memphis...These were signposts that
marked the widening concerns of the civil rights movement in the late 1960's.
The issues of war, poverty and economic justice became intertwined, adding
complexities to the vision of "The Promised Land."
Volume 11- Ain't Gonna Shuffle No More (1964-1972)
Muhammad Ali...Howard University...Gary, Indiana...Through these names,
"black pride" came to the fore in the fight for true equality. African-Americans
began to celebrate their roots, their history and their culture.
Volume 12- A Nation of Law? (1968-1971)
The Black Panther Party...Fred Hampton...Attica... These names equaled
controversy in the America of law and order promised by President Richard Nixon.
Urban rebellion and campus unrest had brought cycles of protest and a reprisal,
leaving many Americans to question, was this "A Nation of Law?"
Volume 13- The Keys to the Kingdom (1974-1980)
Busing...Maynard Jackson...Affirmative Action...From the streets of South
Boston to Atlanta's city hall to the Supreme Court, Americans sought remedies
for the problems of discrimination. Parents pushed for equality in education,
workers pushed for equal opportunity, and the courts were pressed to decide what
was fair.
Volume 14- Back to the Movement (1979-mid-1980's)
Miami...Chicago...Harold Washington...These names stood out in the third
decade of the civil rights movement. The powerlessness that was felt in many
black communities provoked both rage and activism. "Back to the Movement" is a
study in contrasts. It is a story of people who had the courage to stand up and
point to the road America must travel.

THE MASSACHUSETTS 54TH COLORED INFANTRY
When the Civil War began, black men clamored for a chance to strike a blow
for the liberation of the African-American race. They were ready to fight for
the abolition of slavery and the extension of full citizenship rights by the
war's end. Their desire to participate was rejected until the first officially
sanctioned regiment of northern black soldiers was formed in Boston. The feature
film "Glory" along with the public television series "The Civil War," gave many
Americans their first exposure to he fact that African-American men fought
against slavery. This film tells the complete story of that regiment-who they
were and why they fought.
THE MURDER OF EMMETT TILL
The shameful, sadistic murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till, a black boy who
whistled at a white woman in a Mississippi grocery store in 1955, was a powerful
catalyst for the Civil Rights movement. Although Till's killers were
apprehended, they were quickly acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury and
proceeded to sell their story to a journalist, providing grisly details of the
murder. Three months after Till's body was recovered, the Montgomery Bus Boycott
began.

discrimination. On successive days, each group was treated as inferior and
subjected to discriminatory treatment. This FRONTLINE reunites the teacher and
class after 15 years to relate the enduring effects of their lesson.

BILL COSBY ON PREJUDICE
In one long, jolting monologue, Bill Cosby, portraying America's composite
bigot, tells us there's nothing funny about prejudice. Produced early in his
career, this best-selling film continues to drive home the absurdity of racial
and ethnic hatred. Impossible to watch without emotional involvement, it's a
catalyst for serious thought and discussion leading to an honest examination of
attitudes.
BLACK AGAINST BLACK PREJUDICE
Prejudice against blacks has always been an unfortunate part of this
country's history. But it seems that sometimes the discrimination can come from
the most unlikely place-from within the black community itself. When blacks feel
prejudice coming from their own community, it takes on a whole different tone.
One of the guests on this specially adapted Phil Donahue program says she was
discriminated against in a restaurant by a black waitress who did not like
serving fellow blacks; we also meet the reluctant waitress. Additional guests
include: Mohammed Naseehu Ali, an African from Ghana who says black on black
prejudice is worse in Africa; Kathy Russell and Midge Wilson, co-authors of the
color complex; J. Edward Giles, publisher of Image magazine; Donna
Stewart, who almost lost her job because she was "too light"; and Paul Parker,
who disagrees that blacks are fighting against other blacks to such an extent.

NBC News
Few other issues in American life provoke the kind of discussion and emotion
that race does, specifically the relationship between blacks and whites. Despite
tremendous strides, there is little doubt that deep-seated emotions between
blacks and whites still divide Americans. This NBC News program examines blacks
and whites at work, in their communities and the question of separate worlds,
myths about blacks and whites, and what the future holds for the already
delicate relationship between blacks and whites in America. (77 Minutes)
BLUE EYED
Jane Elliott's widely-known "blue eyed/brown eyed" exercise is the oldest
and most celebrated anti-racism awareness program in the country. It began as a
simple class-room simulation for Elliott's all-white Iowa 3rd grade class the
after Dr. Martin Luther Kings' assassination in 1968. Since then her dramatic
technique has been featured on Today, the Tonight Show, Donahue, Oprah,
ABC News and PBS' Frontline, and corporate agenda. Now Blue Eyed
offers every American a chance to sit-in on a full-length workshop with
Americas most dynamic diversity trainer, Jane Elliott.
Elliott asserts that, "A person who has been raised and socialized in America
has been conditioned to be a racist... We live in two countries, one black and
one white." She believes it is essential for whites to experience, if for only a
few hours, the emotional impact of bias. In Blue Eyed, she discriminates
among a group of 40 typical strictly on their eye color. In no time, the
stigmatized blue-eyed member become distracted and depressed, demonstrating the
impact of life-long discrimination on minority achievement and self-esteem. It's
a lesson few participants -or- viewers -are ever likely to forget.
COLOR ADJUSTMENT

THE COLOR OF FEAR
This film is about the pain and anguish that racism has caused in the lives
of eight North American men of Asian, European, Latino, and African descent.
"The Color of Fear" examines the effects that racism has had on each of the men.
One by one, the men reveal the pain and scars that racism has caused them, the
defense mechanisms they use to survive, their fears of each other, and their
hopes and visions for a multicultural society.
THE COLOR OF FEAR 2
Walking Each Other Home, winner of the Cindy International Silver Medal for
Best Social Science Film, is the continuation of The Color of Fear. The new
sequel explores more in depth the intimate relationships amongst the men as well
as answering the question, "what can whites do to end racism?" The Answer to
that question, and many others, are explored in this fascinating conclusion t
one the most explosive films on race issues in this country.

of Sheboygan, New Orleans and Duluth, and from new immigrants to
eighth-generation citizens.
