Master of Science in Management

Purpose

The Master of Science in Management provides managers with the specialized knowledge and skills to meet a variety of demands, prepares students to apply systems thinking to managerial problems and emphasizes the role of information technology in the modern firm.  Graduates of the M.S. program are equipped for a variety of leadership positions, such as accounting firm managers, finance managers, project and product managers, technology managers and marketing and human resources directors.

The program provides the student with the ability to specialize in a chosen field, with concentrations in four areas:  accounting (CPA track), organizational development, marketing, and technology management.  All concentrations consist of core courses emphasizing cross-functional skills in information resource management, project management and business system design. The program requires a minimum of 30 graduate credits, and courses are held in the evenings and summer sessions

General Guidelines for Students

Foundation Courses

The three foundation course requirements; MGMT 500 Computational Statistics, ACFI 505 Accounting and Finance for Managers and MGMT 506 Marketing and Contract Management  should be satisfied prior to registering for any M.S. in Management course. These requirements can alternatively be satisfied by completion of appropriate undergraduate courses: a statistics course for MGMT 500, one course each in accounting and finance for ACFI 505, and one course each in marketing and business law for MGMT 506. Students in the Accounting concentration should not enroll in ACFI 505 and must satisfy other prerequisites as well. If a needed foundation course is not offered in a particular semester, or if a student wishes to take a course in addition to a foundation course, permission can be requested from the appropriate graduate coordinator for some M.S. courses. However, the foundation courses cannot be waived and must be satisfied as early in a student's program of study as possible.

To view the required courses within the M.S. in Management program, see the online college catalog.

Core Courses

In general, the five core courses should be scheduled early in a student's program of study.

Concentration Courses

Each of the four concentration areas requires the completion of three courses as specified.

Elective Course

A student may take any approved M.S. in Management course, including MGMT 535, to satisfy the elective course requirement.

Capstone Course

Students in the Technology Management, Marketing or Organizational Development concentrations take MGMT 590 as their capstone course. Accounting concentrators take ACFI 595 as their capstone course. The capstone course must be taken at Bridgewater State College during the last full semester of master's studies and is limited to matriculated students.

Non-Matriculated Students

Non-matriculated, yet degree-seeking students who have not submitted a final application for admission must declare their intentions during the first semester in which they take an M.S. (non-foundation) course, and take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) prior to or during that semester, to continue with their M.S. studies. Final applications for admission must be submitted prior to the completion of 12 credit hours of graduate study to receive permission to continue to take M.S. courses. Non-matriculated students who do not intend to seek an M.S. degree, but who would like to take some master's courses, may so declare and receive permission from the appropriate graduate coordinator for certain courses. However, all students taking master's courses in management are expected to meet the admission standards for the M.S. program.

Admission

Application for admission should be made through the Office of Graduate and Continuing Education. Qualifications for admission include an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or better. GMAT exam scores are also required.  Students wishing to register for the GMAT can do so easily at www.mba.com.  They will find a large network of testing sites to choose from.  Applicants with a GMAT score less than 450 are rarely admitted to the program. Admission to the program is very competitive and applicants with GMAT scores of 450 or greater fare best in the selection process. International students are not exempt from this requirement. This examination may be taken more than once.

Provisional admission is possible in exceptional cases. There is no undergraduate major requirement.

Five-Year B.S./M.S.

Undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credit hours of coursework at Bridgewater State and can complete all requirements for their B.S. or B.A. degree in 30 additional credits may apply for the five-year BS/MSN program. Those admitted take a mix of undergraduate and graduate courses during their fourth and fifth year, and graduate with both degrees. Admission to this program is selective and limited.
