Panelists Discuss Impact of Economy and Stimulus Plan (April 2009) -

The Department of Economics in the School of Business at
Bridgewater State College (BSC) hosted its quarterly Business Speaker Series
Event on April 17 in the Moakley Auditorium at BSC. The Panelist Discussion
focused on the current economic situation and the effect the Economic Stimulus
Package will have on the local economy, and its impact on BSC directly.The
event, which was sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurship Studies (CES) at
BSC, was hosted by the Department of Economics and moderated by Dr. Michael
Jones, Assistant Professor of Economics. The panelists and topics included:
- Daniel McCarthy; Vice President in Charge of
Institutional Business Development for the Midwest for Eaton Vance
Management who provided an explanation of how this economic
downturn occurred and whether President Obamas team is on the right track
for repairing the economy
- Tom Caron (Alumni); President and CEO at
Bank of Easton who clarified whether real estate prices found a
bottom to the market and whether the banking and/or real estate industry are
seeing any results from the stimulus package (in terms of mortgages/loans
being issued again)
- Adrienne Kravitz (Alumni); Owner Capital Realty
Partners, Owner Kravitz Cranberries/ AKCM Cranberries, Partner MCG
Partners, and Vice President Right Management Consultants who provided an
account of how the current state of the economy is affecting her businesses
personally as well as how she advises her clients to prosper in this kind of
economy
- Janet Gumbris;
Director of the Financial Aid Department, Bridgewater State College
who provided a description of the effect the economy is having on BSC
enrollment and financial aid, and discussed what changes/adjustments BSC is
making as a result.
The panel
discussion also included a variety of rapid response questions for panelists
relating to economic and energy policies, the job market and the health care
system, to name a few.
Michael Draper, CIO, Network World Magazine (November 2008)
The School of Business and the Society
for Information Management co-sponsored a breakfast event for students
interested in careers in information management. BSC graduate
Michael Draper is
responsible for leading Network World's operations, information technology and
corporate services functions. Draper has over 20 years experience in the
technology industry, including experience in product development, technology
management and professional services in both domestic and international
settings. Prior to joining Network World, Draper worked in various strategic
capacities at Olivetti, Stream International and Honeywell.
Author Vicki Donlan spoke to a large audience of students,
faculty, administrators, and staff at the September Business Breakfast Series.
Ms. Donlan is the founder and former publisher of Women's Business Boston, a
25,000 controlled-circulation newspaper devoted to women in businesses in
Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. She is a regular guest discussing
women's business issues on New England Cable News' Business Day.
Lisa DiTullio, Director, Project Management Office, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
(January 2008)
Lisa DiDullio, Director of the Project Management Office, at
Boston-based Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, spoke to a group of students, faculty,
administrators, and community members at the January 29 Business Breakfast
Series. Ms. DiTullio is author of the book, Simple Solutions:
How "Enterprise Project Management" Supported Harvard Pilgrim Health Care's
Journey from Near Collapse to #1.
James Dunphy '89, President and CEO, Hampshire First Bank (March 2007)
James Dunphy, accounting graduate of the
class of 1989, spoke to an audience with large representation of today's
accounting students. Mr. Dunphy, first president and CEO of the community
bank, Hampshire First Bank, spoke to students about the foundation he developed
at BSC. He also credited his parents, who were in attendance, for
instilling a work ethic that has drawn the attention of his superiors at every
stage of his career. After his remarks, he took questions from the
audience about current events in banking.
David Oreck, Founder and Chairman, Oreck Corporation (February 2007)
David Oreck, a man synonymous with the vacuum cleaner empire that
bears his name, was a very special guest of the School of Business
and shared some of the secrets behind his success with students,
faculty and members of the local community. A sampling of Mr.
Orecks pearls of wisdom are included in this episode of

Tom Kiley, President and CEO, Northeast Gas Association (April 2006)
Tom Kiley, president and CEO of the Northeast Gas Association (NGA),
has been studying the changing energy world of New England for
decades. As the head of a regional trade association representing
natural gas distribution and transmission companies, liquefied
natural gas importers, manufacturers and suppliers to the industry,
Mr. Kiley is keenly aware of the growing challenges and complex
dynamics involved with linking supply to demand.
Speaking as a
featured guest of the college's School of Business breakfast series,
however, Kiley noted that one fact was undeniable: Energy
consumption will continue to soar for the foreseeable future.

Bob Good '71, Founder & CEO, Good Leads (March 2006)
The third installment of Bridgewater State Colleges School of
Business Breakfast Series delivered a potent combination of
information and inspiration as Bob Good, 71, told attendees about
his life, accomplishments and keys to success.
Mr. Good has 25
years of experience in sales, marketing and management, including
his work for Fortune 500 companies. He is founder and CEO of Good
Leads of Salem, N.H., a business that connects companies with
customers in the U.S. and abroad.
