The Canadian Studies Program at Bridgewater State University has been involved in many activities. The following is a list of some of the Program's recent accomplishments:
2011-2012
BSU is hosting Canadian exchange students Ms. Michelle Lepage of the University of Ottawa and Ms. Isabelle Teasdale Boivin of the Université de Montréal for the fall 2011 semester.
2010-2011
Mr. Robert Bradley received a Killam Exchange Fellowship to study in Canada. Mr. Bradley attended York University for the fall 2010 semester, while BSU hosted Ms. Constance Naud-Arcand of the University of Montreal.
Dr. Michael Peterman, Emeritus York University, spent the spring 2011 semester in residence at BSU as the Killam Professor of Canadian Studies. Dr. Peterman taught ENGL 320/HIST 439: Canada's Coming of Age and lectured to the BSU community and the public.
The Honourable Pierre Marc Johnson, former Premier of Québec, delivered the 12th Distinguished Canadian Annual Address, Québec Stakes in a Canada-European Union Agreement.
In April 2011, Canadian Studies presented a symposium, Examining Canada's Role in Afghanistan, with Dr. Nipa Banerjee, University of Ottawa; Dr. Kenneth Holland, Ball State University; Dr. Christopher Kirkey, SUNY Plattsburgh; and Dr. Stephane Roussell, Université du Québec à Montréal.
Dr. Sandra Popiden of Political Science led a Parliament study tour to Ottawa, Ontario. Six BSU students toured Parliament, spoke to Canadian senators and members of Parliament, and visited Canadian Universities, museums, and other centers of cultural, political, and economic significance. Dr. Popiden was awarded a Student Mobility Grant by Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).
Dr. Ilter Bakkal of Economics led 4 members of the Canada Club to Québec, where they explored Québec's cultural history, economics, and U.S.-Canada relations.
Dr. Jodi Cohen and Dr. Jennifer Raymond of Sociology, and 6 BSU students who took part in the study tour to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in July 2010, presented joint papers at the 2010 MANECCS Biennial Conference in Providence, RI.
2009-2010
Celebrated Canadian author Mr. Nino Ricci served as the inaugural Killam Professor of Canadian Studies. In residence at BSU for the fall 2009 semester, Mr. Ricci taught a fiction-writing workshop for the Department of English, gave readings from his works and lectured both on-and off-campus.
The Honourable Donald H. Oliver, QC, senator for Nova Scotia, delivered the 11th Distinguished Canadian Annual Address, "Diversity and the Digital Divide: The Challenge for Universities."
Drs. Jodi Cohen and Jennifer Raymond led a research tour for 5 BSU students to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where they conducted research and interviews on the effect of Old Lunenburg's designation as a World Heritage site on the residents. Both professors and students will present papers based on their research at the fall 2010 MANECCS Biennial Conference in Providence, RI, as well as giving presentations at BSU.
Dr. Ilter Bakkal led 5 members of the Canada Club on a brief study tour to Montreal, Quebec.
A group of 9 BSU students participated in the Can/Am Exchange: Boston, where they assisted at the keynote address and luncheon as well as breakout seminars, and took advantage of networking opportunities.
Canadian Studies members attended the Association for Canadian Studies in the U.S. conference in San Diego. Participants included Drs. Anthony Cicerone, Ilter Bakkal, Andrew Holman, Robert MacMillan, and Mr. Nino Ricci.
