This BSU Student Handbook is a guide to student's rights, responsibilities and resources.
Students are responsible for satisfactory attendance in each course for which they are registered. The instructor, within the context of this policy statement, shall determine satisfactory attendance. The approval of excused absences and the assignment of makeup work are the prerogative of the course instructor as usually specified in the course syllabus. The university Health Services does not make judgments about whether a student can attend class except in rare cases when attendance would be harmful to the student's health or the health of others. In general, students will be excused without penalty for reasons such as illness, participation in official university events, personal emergencies and religious holidays. Students should contact faculty members in advance of any absence whenever feasible or upon their return to classes, to determine the impact of the absence on academic requirements. If a student has a concern with regard to the attendance policies or a faculty member has a concern about a student's excessive absence, he or she should confer with the chairperson of the department.
NOTE: If a student fails to attend the first three class hours of a course, the instructor has the option of deleting the student from the class roll.
