First Year Service-Based Residential Learning Community

About the Community

The First Year Service-Based Residential Learning Community is a group of students that are dedicated to becoming engaged in their community and making a difference through service. Each student who selects this community lives on the same floor as other students who are driven by serving their community. Students who sign up to live in this community will have the unique opportunity to work with dynamic faculty, who are experts in the areas of service and social justice. Residents of the service-based RLC will also be connected with the many resources that BSU’s Community Service Center has to offer.

The primary goals of the First Year Service-Based Residential Learning Community are:

  • To develop a community of students who have a mutual interest in “making a difference” in the southeastern Massachusetts region
  • To help students gain knowledge (or become aware) of the social issues that affect the region
  • To engage in deep dialogue and reflection in furthering their own personal sense of their place as civically engaged citizens
  • To develop socially conscious students who will lead effective service programs and inspire their peers to join them in becoming leaders and change agents on their campus and in Southeastern Massachusetts
