CH490: Study Tour to Japan

May 20-June 3, 2009

The main focus of this study tour is to provide students with hands on exposure to science and technology issues in Japan. More specifically, we will seek information and fist-hand knowledge by visiting factories and other facilities on technological and engineering advances, environmental issues and recycling, and earthquake preparations. Science museums will be visited in addition to factories and plants, and broader science topics such as architecture will be covered. A visit to the Atomic Bomb Museum in Hiroshima is included as well. Secondly, a visit to the Chemistry department at Hiroshima University is scheduled for one afternoon, where BSC students will interact with Japanese students and make presentations about their  research and otter cultural topics. There will also be ample time for roaming and sightseeing.

Highlights

  • Five days in Osaka, 3 days in Hiroshima and 5 days in Kyoto with a day trip to Nara
  • Ride on Shinkansen (Bullet Train above) between Osaka and Hiroshima
  • Experience both a formal Japanese and Sushi Dinner
  • Free time to enjoy all Japan has to offer, such as, anime cafes, temples, shrines, and museums

Faculty Leader

Dr. Chifuru "Chief" Noda was born and raised in Takarazuka, Japan near Osaka. He is fluent in Japanese and is familiar with culture and customs. The study tour will visit his "play areas" and students will be exposed to non-tourist experiences of everyday Japanese life.
