Services Offered by the Office of Teaching and Learning

In addition to a range of grant programs and the Teacher-Scholar Summer Institute, the Office of Teaching and Learning offers a range of programming and consultation services for individual faculty, departments and programs.  All programming and consultation services are open to both full and part-time faculty.

Teaching Consultations

·      One-one-one consultations.  Whether you seek reflection, renewal, or other resources, you may reach out to the director or fellows for work in a confidential and supportive environment, including (but not limited to):

o   Classroom observation.  This involves a pre-observation conversation (ideally addressing teaching materials, goals, etc.), a class visit, and a post-observation debrief.

o   Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID).  Midway through a course, find out what is helping students learn, what would help them learn even better, and what they say they could do to improve learning in the course. The director or a fellow talks with students for 20 minutes, then has a scheduled debrief with you to give you the data and discuss it.

o   Informal conversation/brainstorming. The teaching fellows and director are available to talk about assignments, activities, assessments, syllabus design, teaching philosophy.  Call or email any of us any time!

 Programming

Information on faculty development programming sponsored wholly or in part by the Office of Teaching and Learning is available on the faculty development calendar (updated weekly) and the Office of Teaching and Learning semester events pages.  Visit the Fall 2012 Development Events page for upcoming workshop information.

To set up an appointment for teaching consultation or for additional information about the Office of Teaching and Learning, contact Roben Torosyan, OTL Director.

Confidentiality policy:  Consultations take place only at the invitation of the faculty member for formative / improvement purposes.  Any written records generated during any consultation are held in complete confidence and returned to the faculty member afterwards.  At no time is information supplied by the director or any person associated with the OTL for use in summative personnel decisions.   In addition, no conversation about the consultation or any other aspect of an instructor’s teaching may occur with anyone outside of the OTL.
