Transfer Credit Appeal Process

Bridgewater has policies and procedures in place that expedite and streamline the transfer of courses and credits. However, there are times when special circumstances prohibit a course from being transferred automatically or applied to a specific requirement, and more information is needed to determine the transferability of that course. Transfer students at Bridgewater may appeal a decision if they feel that transfer credit has not been granted in accordance with college policy. Before appealing a course, here are a few reasons why a course may not transfer.

  • Courses must be transferred from an accredited institution.
  • Only grades of C- or above will transfer, with the exception of students enrolled in the Commonwealth Transfer Compact or the MassTransfer Program.
  • Remedial courses do not transfer.
  • If you took the same course at different institutions, you can only receive credit for the same course once.
  • 90 credits may be accepted in transfer by Bridgewater and be applied to the baccalaureate degree, only 69 will be accepted from two-year institutions. Note: if you have more than the maximum number of credits allowed in transfer and would like to discuss which courses would be most beneficial to your degree program, please contact the Office of Admissions or the Director of Transfer Services.

If a course did not transfer for one of the reasons listed above, notify the Office of Admissions.

If a course was transferred to Bridgewater and applied to the Free Electives category, an equivalency was not determined by the Office of Admissions. There are two appeal processes in place depending on whether a student is seeking applicability for a core or a major requirement. It is the student's responsibility to provide the information needed. Note: Core appeals are accepted throughout the year; Major course appeals are accepted September through May.

  • If a student is seeking applicability for a core requirement, a Core Substitution Form must be completed and submitted to the Dean of the College in which the course resides (contact information below). Students should provide as much information as possible, i.e. course description, syllabus, course work, etc. Note: Core courses may fulfill more than one requirement, for example, a World History course may fulfill a Humanities, Global and Multicultural requirement. Click here to see a Sample Core Substitution Form.
  • If a student is seeking applicability for a Writing or Speaking intensive core requirement, a Core Substitution Form must be completed and submitted to the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, located in the Maxwell Library (contact information below).

Writing Intensive: Students must demonstrate that a course taken at another college required the writing of 15 or more pages of revised text (does not have to be one 15 page paper, i.e. it can be three-five page papers), and that this same course provided instruction on how to improve the student's writing. Note: Students are expected to provide as much information as possible: a copy of the course description from the catalog of that institution, a syllabus for the semester you took the course (the syllabus must show that the requirements indicated above were met in the class), or if the syllabus is not available, papers and/or projects from the course.

Speaking Intensive: Students must demonstrate that a course taken at another college required three or more oral presentations and provided instruction on how to improve speaking. Note: Do not confuse this speaking intensive requirement with the Core Skill Communication Speaking requirement found in the first section of the degree audit. The first section of the degree audit (Core Skill/Quant Reasoning Req) is the only section on the degree audit where you can not double dip. Note: Students are expected to provide as much information as possible: a copy of the course description from the catalog of that institution, a syllabus for the semester you took the course (the syllabus must show that the requirements indicated above were met in the class), or if the syllabus is not available, papers and/or projects from the course.
  • If a student is seeking course equivalency for a major course requirement, an Undergraduate Transfer Course Equivalency Form must be submitted to the chairperson of the major department that the course is in. All contact information can be found in the college directory. Note: Major course appeals are accepted September through May.
