Photography
The Photography Concentration prepares students for continued graduate
study and for careers within the fields of both fine art and commercial
photography. The concentration offers education in traditional
black-and-white darkroom and in digital photography.
In addition to the required courses, we offer special topics courses in
photography on a rotating basis. These special topics courses cover
specialized themes and methods such as historic and alternative
techniques, commercial photography, photojournalism and
entrepreneurship in photography. The options for photography electives
encourage students to explore related disciplines in graphic design and
time-based art. We encourage students in the program to take part in
the photography internship opportunities to gain practical experience.
The photography area darkroom and studio area offers 13 enlargers that
accommodate up to 4" x 5" film, an ultraviolet exposure table for
historic processes, an 8" x 10" enlarger, a large classroom that
doubles as a photography studio and a mini computer lab with four
computers with color calibrated LaCie monitors and print finishing
area. The Art Department makes use of a computer lab in the Moakley
Technology Center where the digital photography classes are taught. The
Art Department offers a variety of archival printing options for
digital photographs including an Epson 7600, which prints 24" wide. In
addition, a variety of types of photography equipment are available for
classroom instruction and student checkout including large format (4x5)
film cameras, studio strobe lighting equipment and modifiers, SLR
digital cameras, and a variety of accessories. Students need to
provide their own 35mm or medium format film camera but all other
equipment that students need for courses is provided through the
checkout process.
Questions regarding the Photography Concentration should be directed to
Professor Ivana George or
Professor Mary Dondero.
