Insights for the future

Taneequa Fields, ’12

When social work major Taneequa Fields, ’12, spent a semester interning as a mentor with Friends of the Children-Boston, she gained first-hand experience with a side of life she had never known.

“I saw homelessness and real poverty,” she says, “plus poor education and a lack of parental involvement. It was a really bad situation, but still, the kids were wonderful.”

A native of Dorchester and single mother, Taneequa worked with at-risk Roxbury and Jamaica Plain youngsters both in and out of the classroom. Later, she impressed a room full of graduate students and professors with a thoughtful and articulate presentation about her internship experience, held at Friends of the Children’s Boston headquarters.

Taneequa – who balances school, studying and daycare with time at home with her 2-year-old son Caine – plans to continue her education at Boston University’s Graduate School for Social Work. Her goal is to work in juvenile probation and ultimately to serve in the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.

She believes her Bridgewater internship provided important insights that will serve her well. “What’s important is to focus on the kids,” she explains. “They have a lot to deal with – but they’re good kids.”
