Apply to tutor for Math Services

Enjoy math? Want a teaching experience that's also a learning experience? Then becoming a tutor with Math Services might be for you. Here's what it takes.

Qualifications

Math Services tutors are typically undergraduate students enrolled at Bridgewater State College. To be eligible to be paid for your work, you will present your Social Security card and photo ID to Human Resources in the application process.

A tutor for Math Services need not be a mathematics major, but should have a history of excellence in mathematics courses and a patient ability to work with others.

It is expected that every tutor at Math Services be comfortable tutoring developmental and introductory core courses. This includes math readiness courses and Precalculus. Tutors can also expect to see several students from Topics (105) and Elementary Education (112/113/114). You need not have taken these courses, but should be willing to provide help as best you can.

Comfort with statistics, calculus, and upper level courses is not required, but it may increase the number of hours for which we will schedule you.

Application materials

To complete an application to tutor:

  • Download and complete the Tutor Application Form. Be sure to complete the course grid on Page 1 completely.
    • Be sure to indicate whether you are applying to tutor under a work study award. Work study students may receive preferential hiring and scheduling.
  • Secure a recommendation from a faculty member who can speak to your mathematical skills and ability to work with others. Provide him/her with the relevant page from the application form. If your last mathematics course was in high school, your high school teacher would be a good resource.
    • You may submit the rest of your application in advance of the recommendation.
  • Submit your application and recommendation to Berta Eldredge in the Academic Achievement Center. You may also wish to e-mail the Director of Math Services, Dr. Matt Salomone, to ensure your application has been received. You should hear back within a week or two.
