Padraig O'Malley, the John Joseph Moakley Distinguished Professor of Peace and Reconciliation at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, came to campus to deliver his talk, “War & Peace: Illusions We Comfort Ourselves With.” The address was part of the first John Quincy Adams Foreign Affairs Distinguished Speaker series.

Mr. O'Malley's career as a peacemaker began in 1975, when he brought people from all parties to the conflict in Northern Ireland to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and has grown to include numerous countries and regions of the world divided by conflict. He helped to facilitate the Anglo Irish Agreement (1985), the Good Friday Agreement (1998), and the Helsinki Agreement (2008).

Based on his philosophy that cultures in conflict are in the best position to help other cultures in conflict, O'Malley created the Forum for Cities in Transition from Conflict in 2010. Three annual conferences have resulted in more than 70 agreed outcomes.

Among many others, O'Malley has received the Peacemaker's Award from the Association of Dispute Resolution; the Liberal International Freedom Prize (European Union); the Dispute Resolution Award, University of Massachusetts Boston; the International Association of Universities' Peace Award; and the Christopher Edward-Biggs Memorial Prize for his book, The Uncivil Wars: Ireland Today, for its contribution to Anglo/Irish understanding.

The talk was presented by The Minnock Center for International Engagement. (photo by Matthew Weatherbee, ’17, University News)
