Speakers at the Opening Day convocation held in the Campus Center auditorium gave hundreds of incoming students similar advice: cherish your time at BSU and experience all the university has to offer.
Taking the podium to offer words of wisdom, President Dana Molher-Faria told the Class of 2016 to savor their first year at BSU. He told the students to seize challenging opportunities that will help them grow academically and personally, and prepare them for life outside college.
"It's about transformation of a life," he said. "We want you to leave this place ready to face the world."
Echoing the president's sentiments was Lou Ricciardi, '81, chairman of the BSU Board of Trustees. "I invite you to engage in all that's available at BSU today," he said.
Alumna Michaela Johnson, '09, a scholar athlete during her time at BSU, stressed the importance of thriving academically, but also jumping on the many opportunities outside the classroom, such as learning abroad and getting involved in campus organizations. "Grow as a [BSU] Bear, a student and as a person," she said.
Ms. Johnson, a Riverside, R.I. native, is currently co-host of The Rhode Show, which airs all over Rhode Island and in Bristol County, Mass. She earned the position after winning the show's Search for a Star contest in 2010.
In his amusing student address, senior Jabril Robinson called the underclassmen superheroes, as they each possess unique abilities to succeed in college and in life. "And just like superheroes," he said, "you can all be positive role models to friends and family and to those you don't know are watching."
Mr. Robinson, a Resident Assistant involved in many clubs on campus, concluded his speech on a note of solidarity, telling the students to look around the room at their classmates. "These are the people who are going to help shape the person you will become," he said. (Rob Matheson, '07, G '12, University Advancement; videos and additional photos by Moakley TV Studio)
