Fond Farewell

News & Events

The recent international graduation ceremony recognized and celebrated the achievements of nine exchange students. The annual event caps the students’ time on campus, and allows administrators and faculty to share with the visitors a fond farewell.

“The ceremony is a bittersweet time for our students as well as for me personally,” said Dr. Roopa Rawjee, director of international student services.

The mid-year symposium featured the research of more than 620 students from a wide range of disciplines. Most had received grants from the Adrian Tinsley Program that helped fund their work.

Native Awareness

News & Events

The university hosted the annual National Native American Heritage Month Powwow. The event brought hundreds to campus to participate in a ceremony of drumming and dance that is central to the Native American experience.

“They dance for healing, for themselves, for their family. They dance for their creator. They dance for a number of different reasons,” said Dr. Joyce Rain Anderson, English professor and one of the organizers of the event.

As for the drumming that marks the powwow, she added, “That’s the heartbeat, the beat of Mother Earth.”

Cold, Hard Lessons

News & Events

Students once again took to the great outdoors to call attention to the problem of homelessness.

Bearing the brunt of a long, cold week, sleeping in tents and eating from a mock soup kitchen, the students learned firsthand how difficult life on the streets can be. While living outside, they still attended classes and did their homework, only without the aid of electronics. Meanwhile, each day brought a speaker to address issues affecting the homeless.

Hear from some of the participants in the video below.

Nelson Mandela Service

News & Events

As world leaders gather in Soweto today to memorialize Nelson Mandela and his many commitments to racial harmony, social justice, human rights and peace, the Bridgewater State University Community will gather at 12:30 p.m. in Boyden Hall's Horace Mann Auditorium to honor his life and legacy.
