Tsongas Scholarship Recipients Honored

Recipients of this year's Paul E. Tsongas scholarship, including a number of BSU students, were honored during a ceremony held in the Great Hall of Flags of the Massachusetts Statehouse.[br][br]As part of a program founded in 1998 in memory of U.S. Sen. [b]Paul E. Tsongas[/b], Massachusetts, who died in 1997, the nine state universities each year award a number of scholarships to top high school graduates in the commonwealth. These scholarships cover all tuition costs and mandatory fees at the institutions.

The Office of Institutional Diversity hosted its annual Day of Dialogue, where campus community members joined in group discussions and workshops centered on issues of race, gender and social justice. [br][br]Organizer [b]Sabrina Gentlewarror[/b] said the day-long event, subtitled, "Race and Gender: Making Connections," aimed to raise awareness about racism and gender bias and explore avenues for creating equality on campus and beyond. Africa Awareness Week Held (Multimedia)

The world's second most populous continent was the topic at BSU last week, as the institution sponsored its fifth annual Africa Awareness Week. The schedule featured nearly five full days and nights of activities, including music and dance performances, extensive film viewings, student panel discussions, African food, and lessons on speaking Swahili. Beginning Wednesday, the Center for Middle East Studies will sponsor the third annual Middle East Educational Week, featuring a comprehensive and eclectic program of lectures and events investigating a variety of topics currently making news in the region. [br][br]Lectures and discussions will take up issues such as the current situation in Kurdistan, the Middle East in the media, the effects of social media in the region, relations between Turkey and Iraq, and the Iranian nuclear threat. When Invisible Children's documentary, [i]Kony 2012[/i], about the eponymous Ugandan warlord, went viral on YouTube earlier this month, critics lashed out at the charitable organization for using the video to manipulate facts and depict Africans as powerless, among other things.[br][br]Using that controversial video as a jumping off point, BSU guest speaker [b]Dr. Timothy Longman[/b], director of the African Studies Center at Boston University, delivered an informative and often critical lecture on campus about human rights campaigns throughout Africa. The members of a contingent of visitors from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, including [b]Valentina Merdanian[/b], the most recent of the president's distinguished speakers, joined BSU officials for a tour of Plymouth during their stay in the area.[br][br]Ms. Merdanian is the director of institutional relations at Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota. During her address on campus, she spoke about her school and issues surrounding Native American reservations, particularly poverty.

Graphic design went global for students of Assistant Professor [b]Donald Tarallo[/b], when they collaborated with seniors from Hanyang University in South Korea in restyling graphic content and improving system organization for Worcester's waste collection program. [br][br]A collaborative effort between Professor Tarallo, art, and Professor [b]Inyoung Choi[/b] of Hanyang, the "International Design Research" project involved students from both universities sharing sketches and critiquing each others' works weekly online through a collaborative Facebook page.

Honored Gift

Bristol County Savings Bank presented the university a $12,500 gift to be put toward the Adrian Tinsley Program for Undergraduate Research in honor of the program's namesake and former BSU president.[br][br]The donation was presented to BSU in honor of President Emeritus [b]Adrian Tinsley[/b], who served for many years on the bank's board of trustees. [b]President Dana Mohler-Faria[/b] accepted the donation at a campus reception attended by Dr. Tinsley and a number of the bank's board members.[br][br]President Mohler-Faria said he was "personally thrilled" to receive the gift in Dr.
