Who are Graduate Writing
Fellows?
Graduate Writing Fellows (GWFs) are your classmates and colleagues. They share
similar social and academic situations and experience many similar challenges
when it comes to writing that are common to every student - like how to tackle a
writing assignment or finding the time to complete multiple assignments.
What do Graduate Writing Fellows do?
GWFs work with students to sharpen overall writing skills. The focus of GWF and
student interactions is helping students to establish and meet their own writing
goals; organizing and developing cohesive papers, choosing professional sources
of information, and using APA style to document those resources. GWFs provide
peer-to-peer mentoring that discipline-specific. They have faculty mentors for
support and may speak to individual professors about student progress, but GWFs
are not involved in any evaluative process in terms of determining grades. The
GWFs will help you achieve your own best work.
How do Students get Connected with the BSU SSW Graduate Writing Fellows
Program?
There are two ways students can become involved with the program. They may
identify areas of their own writing which they would like to improve, and
self-refer to the program by completing the self-referral form on the BSU MSW
website. A referral can also be made by faculty who want to refer students for
additional support using the faculty referral form.
Students who are accepted to work with a GWF are paired with a writing fellow
who will work with them as a writing coach. Working with the GWF requires
regularly scheduled, weekly, 30-45 minute sessions at a time and location agreed
upon by the GWF and the student. Participation during this program will focus on
the students goals as a writer in social work, and each session with the
writing coach will be organized around those needs and goals, along with faculty
feedback.
Workshops for All MSW Students
In addition to working with referred students, GWFs also hold workshops that
address common writing concerns/issues. In Fall 2012, the GWFs will be holding
the following student-led workshops. Please contact the GWFs for more
information or the GWF faculty mentors. Email addresses are noted below. We
encourage all students to take advantage of these workshops.
