About

Start learning something new today. Start teaching it tomorrow.

As a teacher, you know that education never ends. Learning is a lifelong experience, for those you teach, as well as for yourself. But how do you meet the ever-changing needs of your students while keeping up with the demands of evolving educational technologies, curricula and trends?

In short, how do you advance your teaching techniques while helping your students move forward? Through a Bridgewater State University Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study or Master of Education in Reading. Both programs enable you to enhance your teaching skills while immediately putting into practice what you learn.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Reading

The CAGS in Reading program is designed for educators holding a master's degree who are interested in expanding their knowledge in specialized areas of reading and literacy. A 30-credit-hour curriculum balances content and pedagogical knowledge, focusing on strengthening language and critical thinking skills while expanding programmatic uses of resources and technologies. You will progress through the program with a cohort of fellow professionals, affording countless opportunities to share and learn from each other's experiences.

The CAGS in Reading program complements the credentials of classroom teachers, special educators, speech and language pathologists, administrators, psychologists and private tutors. Graduates are prepared for roles as reading and literacy supervisors, curriculum specialists, resource personnel, program administrators and program consultants. Graduates may also continue their education through the doctoral reading program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Doctoral candidates can negotiate the transfer of 24 CAGS credits toward the 60 credits required to complete the PhD program.

“The experiences and knowledge that I gained while completing my CAGS in Reading at Bridgewater State University prepared me to work across disciplines and in diverse settings. I have a thorough understanding of the literacy needs for schools in the 21st century, because of the knowledge base I acquired through the rigorous, yet collaborative, classes.”

Both meet NCATE accreditation.

Master of Education in Reading

The Master of Education (MEd) in Reading program is built on a 50-year legacy of augmenting the professional development and intellectual growth of practicing educators. The program can prepare you for new roles in education through a challenging, 30-credit-hour curriculum designed to bridge theory and practice, foster values of diversity and advance professionalism and ethical behavior. Focusing on literacy development, assessment and instruction of students with diverse learning and literacy needs, the program includes course work in areas such as Improving Literacy Instruction, Literacy Assessment Principles and Techniques, Research in Literacy Teaching and Learning, and Literacy Curriculum Development and Implementation.

Graduates of the MEd in Reading program serve in a variety of capacities, including early childhood and elementary classroom generalists with a specialty in reading/literacy, middle and secondary reading/literacy and English language arts teachers, reading/literacy specialists or clinicians (all levels), and school or district reading/literacy curriculum leaders.

“The graduate reading program was very challenging, and I felt well prepared to succeed in a reading position after graduation. I have great respect for the graduate reading faculty and their ability to teach students to be the best that they can be.”
