About

Make a Move to Make a Positive Difference.

Today, the challenges of providing and managing public services are more complex than ever. And the need for strategic leaders and creative administrators who can help protect social and economic infrastructures is critical to the growth and success of public service and nonprofit organizations alike.

Are you ready for the challenge?

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) at Bridgewater State University can help you develop the vital skills needed to translate public policies into effective programs and projects, whether at the federal, state or local level. Through in-depth research, course work and practical field experience, you will gain the managerial and organizational expertise necessary to assume leadership roles within diverse agencies in both the public and nonprofit sectors. If you are committed to the ideals of public service and advancing social change, this program can help you do more to make a positive difference.

The Curriculum

The MPA program focuses on developing managerial competence and skills in data analysis, negotiating, budgeting, personnel management and balancing competing public interests. Designed to provide theoretical and practical preparation for careers in public and nonprofit administration, the MPA program offers a generalist MPA track, as well as a Civic and Nonprofit Leadership and Administration (CNLA) concentration.

Designed to provide students with an effective, relevant education, the MPA curriculum focuses on:

  • Developing core competencies in leadership and service
  • Imparting leadership and administrative skills to help strengthen organizational capacity, foster civic and democratic life, and build social capital through an understanding of the historical, political, economic, social and technological aspects of civic and nonprofit organizations
  • Building expertise to integrate sustainable economic development, environmental protection, and social wellbeing at local, regional, national and international levels of governance

The MPA program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).

Internships

Building Knowledge, Growing Relationships.

An internship is a unique and essential part of the learning experience in the MPA program. It’s where classroom learning comes alive, providing you with countless opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life situations – as well as to explore career choices and assess your own special interests. For many students of the program, internships have helped forge important professional relationships, while others have led to permanent positions. Faculty and counselors work with you to help secure internships within government and nonprofit agencies, as well as public service oriented organizations.

22 percent: Potential increase in your annual earnings with an advanced degree

“I graduated in 1998 with a BA in Computer Science and Social Psychology. After working in the music industry for years, I fell into my current nonprofit career without any educational preparation for the work I was doing. In order to advance in my new career, I needed to have a better sense of the political and economic environment that surrounds the field of public administration. The MPA program at Bridgewater offered what I needed and challenged me to look at my everyday activities in a new light. Staffing, budgeting, service delivery, management – I now see these activities in the context of history, theorists, leadership skills and ethics infused into them in a way I had never imagined.”
