An 'immortal life'

Family members of Henrietta Lacks will appear at Bridgewater State University's Horace Mann Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. to discuss the book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot - the latest volume in the One Book One Community program. A book signing will follow the presentation. The event is free and open to the public. 'Amuse Bouche'

"Amuse Bouche: A Visual Narrative of Food" is on display in Bridgewater State University's Maxwell Library through Jan. 9. Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.; Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 12 noon to 11:45 p.m. The library is closed on holidays.

'Under Creation'

An installation of collaborative and solo works by Boston-based artists Kenji Nakyama and Dana Woulfe called "Under Creation" will be hosted by the Wallace L. Anderson Gallery at Bridgewater State University starting Monday, Oct. 6. A reception for the artists will be held Thursday, Oct. 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. The exhibition runs through Thursday, Nov.6.

Scholars Welcomed

Members of the BSU community came together to welcome two of their newest colleagues at the first CARS New Faculty Research Forum of the year. Celebrating the institution’s liberal arts tradition, new faculty members from English and Physics presented their research, while established faculty members from the Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies and Elementary Education served as discussants and shared interdisciplinary perspectives on the research.

Double Time

Mothers Against Drunk Driving has honored the BSU Police with its Police Department of the Month Award. The squad is the only department of its kind to have received the honor.

Also, during the same ceremony in which that award was presented, members of the department surprised Police Chief David Tillinghast with a plaque celebrating his 20 years as head of the department. Frederick Clark, executive vice president and vice president of external affairs, introduced the chief.

Cultural Exploration

Students from Brockton’s East Middle School filled the Horace Mann Auditorium, waiting with anticipation for a tour of the campus and an up-close lesson in Cape Verdean art. 

“We want to introduce them to college life, and interact with the artist and students of Bridgewater,” said Dr. Joao Rosa, executive director of BSU’s Pedro Pires institute for Cape Verdean studies.

Fond Farewell

The Heritage Room of the Maxwell Library was filled to capacity with colleagues and friends who gathered to honor Dr. Howard London, who retired over the summer as the long-time provost and vice president of academic affairs.

President Dana Mohler-Faria began the encomiums with his introduction.
