By Mail

Make a check or money order out to The BSU Foundation.

Include a note on the memo line of your check about what you would like to support (e.g., Bridgewater Fund, scholarships, athletics, etc.).

Mail your check to:
Bridgewater State University Foundation
PO Box 42
Bridgewater, MA 02324-9989

By Phone

Matching gifts are a great way to double or even triple the impact of your support at no additional cost to you. Many companies give generously to educational institutions by matching their employees' and even their employees' spouses' charitable contributions. Use the search bar below or check with your company’s HR department to find out if they participate.

Double or Triple Your Gift
Search for your employer now and increase your impact

If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest. The impact of your gift to Bridgewater State University may be doubled or possibly tripled!

Through planned giving, you can make a charitable gift now or after your lifetime based on assets in your estate. A gift from your estate can provide the university with significant future support while preserving the flexibility you need to take care of yourself and your loved ones. A planned gift can be as simple as adding BSU as a beneficiary on an existing account or including us in your will. Certain planned gifts can also give you immediate tax benefits and guaranteed income for life.

Bridgewater State University has established the 1840 society to honor individuals who have included the university in their estate plans through a will, trust, gift annuity, life insurance policy, retirement plan, etc. If you have included BSU in your will, established a life-income plan or made BSU the beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement plan, you are automatically a member of the 1840 society.

If you are interested in establishing a planned gift with BSU, or would like to let us know that BSU is already in your estate plans, contact development@bridgew.edu.

Bequests and Estate Planning

Leave a Lasting Legacy

A bequest is a way to feel good about leaving a legacy gift that supports BSU students into the future without your having to relinquish assets now — and they can be made in any amount.

What’s a Bequest?

Bequests are typically made from assets in your estate rather than disposable income, and come to university upon your passing. You can plan for a scholarship bequest intention by citing it in your will or living trust, which can be made with your attorney in a new plan or as a codicil existing document. An even easier method, which you can do without an attorney, is to assign Bridgewater as a full or partial beneficiary to a savings or investment account, retirement plan asset or life insurance policy. A bequest is flexible; you can alter or revoke it at any time.

With a bequest of $25,000 or more, you can endow a fund in your name and according to your criteria, with the peace of mind that it will be awarded for generations to come. If you share news of your bequest intention with us, we can work with you to ensure that your wishes are met. It allows us to celebrate your intention in your lifetime. And, your example may inspire others to join you.

Contact development@bridgew.edu to learn more about establishing a bequest intention or to let us know you already have!

Sample Bequest Language

I give to the Bridgewater State University Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, located in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, USA, the sum of ($___________ or _____% of my estate) (for its general charitable purposes) or (for the benefit of [include College or purpose, e.g. The College of Education and Health Sciences, or general scholarships, etc.]).The Federal Identification Number for the Bridgewater State University Foundation is 22-2678005.

Cash is the most common gifting method for most Americans, but it can often be more advantageous to give other assets. For example, you may wish to consider gifts of closely held stock, tangible personal property, the use of which is related to BSU’s mission, mutual fund shares or real estate. Gifting assets can also allow you to have a greater impact on the university and our students. There are also many tax advantages to considering assets like insurance policies and retirement plans that might not be so obvious.

Appreciated Securities

A stock portfolio is often among the most valuable assets you own — and one that can carry substantial capital gain, or appreciation in value. With careful planning, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains tax while supporting our students.

Insurance Policies

When you own a life insurance policy with accumulated cash value, you're essentially sitting on a pile of money. When the original purpose for the protection no longer applies, your life insurance can be redirected to help support a worthwhile cause — like students at BSU.

Retirement Plan Assets

Want to get the most value from your nest egg, protect your heirs from heavy taxes and make your mark at our university? Consider leaving a portion of your retirement plan assets to Bridgewater State University.

Tangible Personal Property

We all own personal property, maybe you’ve purchased real estate, and perhaps have closely held stock. Did you know that these things can be used to benefit both you and Bridgewater?

Real Estate

Imagine avoiding the hassle of selling a piece of property, with no worry about getting a fair price and at the same time realizing valuable income and estate tax deductions.

Closely Held Stock

Closely held stock is shares in a C Corporation, of which the majority of stock is held by a few shareholders. A gift of closely held stock can be a powerful way to contribute to the future of BSU.

Please contact development@bridgew.edu to learn more about how you can support BSU with stocks and other assets.

Where to Give

Bridgewater Fund

The Bridgewater Fund provides critical support for BSU students through scholarships, paid internships, and other life-changing experiences and opportunities.

The unrestricted Bridgewater Fund helps Bridgewater State University address its most urgent ongoing needs. For Bridgewater students, this often means financial assistance for tuition and fees, and internship opportunities. Your annual gift opens doors for students, helping to provide access to higher education.

You can make a gift to the Bridgewater Fund with a gift of any size. Every gift, regardless of amount, helps Bridgewater open more doors for more students.

Internships

Our student interns gain real-world experience and knowledge about career options while also building a network of employer contacts. But the majority of BSU students are already working one or two jobs to help pay for their education, which means many of them are unable to participate in an unpaid internship. Gifts that support internships make a world of difference to these students — deepening their education, opening their eyes, and revealing new realms of possibility.

Your support of the BSU Internship Program allows us to continue to institutionalize these opportunities and make them available to all of our deserving students.

Scholarships

It is increasingly difficult for many students and their families to afford the costs of college. Too many students have to rely on loans that later undermine their ability to pursue careers in the helping professions — like education and social work — and still service their debt load. At Bridgewater, we want deserving students to have access to all the opportunities we offer — and we want them to have access now when they need it most.

Donors who support scholarships are crucial to our mission, enabling us to address an urgent need and make higher education more obtainable for more deserving students.

You can support scholarships by giving a gift of any size to Financial Assistance.

Student Emergency Fund

The Student Emergency Fund supports currently enrolled students facing hardship or crisis. Monies raised will eliminate some of the financial burdens our students face. Funds have been used to support students who have experienced the loss of a parent, fire damage, floods, theft or other crises.

Most recently, the COVID-19 public health crisis has affected our Bridgewater community in ways we never imagined. Students are struggling and face many hardships due to the onset of this pandemic.

You can help ensure that a student is never alone when struggling to navigate this uncertain and challenging time by making a gift to the Student Emergency Fund.
