BSU’s Program Gives Sociology Degree Students the Social Justice Education They Need

Do you feel compelled to understand society so you can make a difference? The sociology program at Bridgewater State University provides tremendous value if you’re considering a career in law, policy development or public administration. Housed in the Department of Sociology, BSU’s Bachelor of Arts in sociology prepares you for a variety of jobs in which research and analytical skills are assets. Many students take their Bachelor of Arts in sociology to the next level in graduate school.

At BSU, you can choose from three concentrations in sociology. With a double major in education, our sociology education concentration qualifies you to pursue a rewarding teaching career. Or consider earning your BA in sociology in our global studies and social justice track or urban sociology, which lay the groundwork for you to work in social work or urban planning and policy. We also offer a sociology minor. Each focus affords you the opportunity to delve into the complex nature of humanity and society, so you can step out into the world prepared for a variety of careers.

Accommodating and dedicated faculty

As you earn your bachelor’s degree in sociology, you’ll learn from professors with diverse backgrounds and with expertise in topical areas such as gun violence and homelessness. You can also take advantage of holistic advising in which we consider your life as a student, employee, family member and friend, with careers for sociology degree holders at the forefront.

Focused, small class sizes

BSU's BA in sociology curriculum features seminar-style classes of 20 students. A capstone course allows you to work closely with faculty in researching a topic of your choice.

Connect and get involved

The Bachelor of Arts in sociology program is only the beginning at BSU. Students in our department have the opportunity for induction into a prestigious international society for sociology majors and minors: Alpha Kappa Delta. Students can also meet likeminded peers in our Sociology Club, which hosts speakers, movie nights and marches, and organizes a clothing drive on campus.

Scholarship opportunities

In addition to BSU’s financial aid options, sociology degree students may qualify for scholarships including the Dr. Clay Greene Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. Morgan C. Brown Memorial Scholarship.

Flexibility to learn on your schedule

BSU’s College of Continuing Studies gives you maximum flexibility to complete your degree. The BA in sociology program may be taken on Bridgewater’s main campus during the day, or you may pursue your degree at night. Our night program follows the same requirements and curriculum as our day program, and many of our faculty members teach during the day as well as at night.

Program of Study for Sociology Majors and Minors

Bridgewater State University’s bachelor’s degree in sociology is differentiated by our three unique concentrations: education, global studies and social justice and urban sociology. Not only will you develop applicable skills for a future career but new course offerings like Youth and Social Change keep your sociology degree current. Meanwhile, core sociology degree courses focus on areas like social theory and data analysis with electives that include Social Inequality and courses on perspectives from global communities from the Middle East to Africa.
