CASE Mission, Vision and Goals
Mission
The Center for the Advancement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education leverages the physical and intellectual resources of BSU to build and support a diverse community of educators and students that promotes STEM interest and literacy both regionally and internationally.
Vision
The Center for the Advancement of STEM Education strives to serve as an outstanding resource in which:
- Community members have equal and open access to STEM education resources;
- BSU students gain confidence and develop leadership skills by sharing STEM knowledge through service-learning experiences;
- Faculty and staff develop professionally as they engage BSU students and community members in STEM outreach.
Goals
- Serve as a catalyst for STEM intellectual engagement in the regional community and beyond through outreach programs (BSU Strategic Plan: Goal 4)
- Work with local schools to provide professional development and resources for preK-12 teachers
- Engage preK-12 students in inquiry-based STEM learning
- Enhance recruitment of STEM majors to BSU through increased engagement of high school students in STEM programming
- Improve access to hands-on STEM learning by expanding lending programs in the CityLab, EarthView and Watershed Access Lab programs
- Support BSU student success by providing STEM service learning and leadership opportunities (BSU Strategic Plan: Goals 1 & 2)
- Engage BSU students in STEM outreach through courses, volunteer and paid positions, and CASE initiatives
- Provide opportunities for BSU students to lead STEM activities for community members
- Expand offerings following assessment of the impact of STEM service learning on BSU student self-efficacy, outcome expectation and attitudes and beliefs towards science
- Contribute to the personal and professional growth of faculty and staff through STEM outreach (BSU Strategic Plan: Goals 2 & 3)
- Facilitate development of faculty and staff-led STEM programs
- Serve as a resource for development of new programs through grant funding
- Broaden the portfolio of STEM outreach programs by expanding multidisciplinary faculty and staff involvement
- Advance diversity in STEM fields through engagement of traditionally under-represented groups in STEM programming (BSU Strategic Plan: Goal 5)
- Increase access to STEM education by developing and providing in-school and on-campus STEM experiences
- Involve diverse students in STEM outreach opportunities through partnerships with student organizations and grant-funded programs that promote underrepresented student access to STEM fields
- Create and support opportunities for BSU students, faculty and staff to serve as role models for underrepresented students
