Program Educational Objectives
Program Educational Objectives (PEO) are goals for our students after they graduate and enter the workforce. Our program provides a base of knowledge and practical skills and introduces students to the ways photonics and optical engineering intersects with environmental justice and social justice. We expect all our graduates to be lifelong learners who continue to develop through their professional roles.
- Graduates will apply foundational skills from their training in photonics and optical engineering in their technical careers.
- Graduates will make a meaningful impact on society by promoting workplace safety and inclusion in their companies, within the professional community, and within their local communities.
- Graduates will behave ethically and responsibly, promoting environmental and social justice where possible.
- Graduates will continue to learn new skills in the workplace or graduate programs that allow them to adapt to new markets and technologies and to advance professionally.
Student Outcomes
The BS Photonics and Optical Engineering follows the Student Outcomes as listed in Criterion 3.
- Graduates will have an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- Graduates will have an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
- Graduates will have an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
- Graduates will have an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
- Graduates will have an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
- Graduates will have an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
- Graduates will have an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
