EXCEL Vocational Admission Requirements

Admission Criteria:

Consideration for admission to the EXCEL Vocational program is given to individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • #1 - Student must want college and competitive paid employment in a vocational field as their ultimate goal, their vision!
  • Vocationally motivated - desire and motivation to learn in a college and vocational setting
  • Basic math skills may be required
  • Confident in ability to fully commit to EXCEL student responsibilities/program components
  • Able to identify future career goals that align with vocational training
  • Expresses strong desire to live and work independently as possible in the community; a vision supported by family/guardian
  • Acceptable social behavior and emotional stability/maturity; no history of disruptive or challenging behaviors
  • Communication skills - ability to adequately interact with others on BSU campus (staff, coaches, professor, peers..)
  • Solid High School attendance record/recommendation letters attesting to academic and vocational commitment

Additional criteria for students applying to the EXCEL Residence Life program:

  • Able to function independently (uses technology, navigates campus, follows own schedule, etc.)
  • Functional daily living skills (personal care, grooming, etc.).
  • Functional self-advocacy skills (knowledge of one’s own disability and learning strengths/needs)
  • Able to independently recognize and react to emergency situations
  • Able to live independent from support staff
  • Able to make appropriate decisions regarding personal safety
  • Able to manage personal belongings (ID, phone, wallet, money, etc.).
  • At least a third-grade reading level
